Program Description:

Italy: Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici - Tuscania

Tuscania - St. Peter's      Tuscania - LdM Building     Tuscania - Walled City
The historic hilltop town of Tuscania is located in the Lazio region of central Italy, in the breathtaking countryside of the Maremma. The LdM program in Tuscania is based on a full immersion concept that differs in emphasis from the Florence and Rome campuses. Because of the size of the town, its geographic location, and its pace, Tuscania is the perfect setting for friendly and frequent interaction with local Italians. Integration into the community is fundamental to the program and, in particular, to the Italian language courses, encouraging students to create real relationships in a cultural context and language that is different from their own.
LdM Tuscania supports its full immersion philosophy through a selection of courses in liberal and creative arts, as well as in the scientific field with the recent opening of the School of Agricultre. History and archaeology classes, for example, focus on the Etruscan, Roman and medieval civilizations that are at the core of Tuscania's history and devlopment, while courses in agricultural sciences and culinary arts highlight Tuscania's connection to the natural cycles and tradition of the region and its territory. Italian Language through Service Learning engages students with the local residents through community service. Site visits and field trips help students to broaden their cultural horizons and expand on what they have learned in class, enhancing the understanding of ancient cultures, customs, and different lifestyles. Students often participate in trips to Rome, Bolsena Lake, Orvieto, and the ancient town of Civita di Bagnoregio.

Students can take courses in:

Italian Language
Music, Cinema and Theater Studies
Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media

A full list of academic areas courses offered at LdM Tuscania can be found on the LdM Tuscania Course Schedule.
