Program Description:

University of Oulu

Situated as far north as Alaska or central Siberia, Finland is a Nordic country with an excellent education system and advanced technology. The city of Oulu is located in Northern Finland, approximately one hour from Helsinki by air. It is a student-friendly city with a comfortable size, tranquil surroundings, and a Scandinavian ambience. Although the two official languages are Finnish and Swedish, English is widely used and understood.

Founded in 1958, the University of Oulu has grown into one of the largest and leading universities in Finland. The University has six faculties: Humanities, Education, Economics and Business Administration, Science, Medicine and Technology with approximately 16,000 students. All faculties offer courses in English. The focus areas of the university are Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine, Information Technology and Wireless Communications, and Northern and Environmental Issues. The university welcomes over 600 international exchange students each year.

UB exchange students at the University of Oulu can take regular courses taught in English or the Scandinavian Studies Program designed for exchange students. All faculties and departments offer some courses in English. Available faculties include:
  • Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (AACSB accredited)
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Humanities
  • Faculty of Medicine
  • Faculty of Science
  • Faculty of Technology
Please view available courses by visiting the University of Oulu course catalogue.  Be sure to select "English" as the language of instruction.  Please notice that you can browse for courses without logging in. In the menu, select Instruction/Courses and either Search or Course Catalog. Oulu operates on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The UB Study Abroad Programs Office converts half credit for ECTS credits. For example, a 6 ECTS credit course taken at Oulu will convert back as 3 UB credits. In many cases a course at Oulu may be worth 5 ECTS credits which will be rounded up to 3 UB credits (not 2.5 credits). Students should enroll in a minimum of 24 ECTS credits per semester to earn 12 UB credits (full time status); however, most students enroll in 30 ECTS credits per semester to earn 15 UB credits. Please see UB Study Abroad Programs with any questions on credit conversion.

These courses can be combined with Finnish language courses. The Language Center offers courses in Finnish language ranging from survival courses to advanced-level courses.

The Scandinavian Studies Program is open to all exchange students regardless of major. The program includes a course in survival Finnish and courses in the fields of History, Social Studies, Cultural Studies, Fine Arts, Literature, and Natural Sciences. Please note this program is only available in the fall semester.

Exchange students apply for housing directly with the International Relations office at the University of Oulu. On-campus apartments are available with two or four rooms and shared kitchens and bathrooms. Visit the University of Oulu housing website for more information.

Estimated costs for this program can be found at the top of this page next to Budget Sheets by clicking on the term.

UB students are encouraged to apply for study abroad scholarships. To learn more about the scholarships available to UB students, please visit our scholarships page.
