Program Description:
Costa Rica: International Librarianship
San José Center
Costa Rica's Capital City--San José

This one-week exploration of librarianship in the Costa Rican context is an optional, non-credit course enhancement for graduate students enrolled in the University at Buffalo's LIS 503: International Librarianship. Students who choose to participate in this travel component agree to pay a fee (in addition to the course tuition) to cover on-site expenses in Costa Rica. The Costa Rica trip follows the completion of LIS 503, affording students the opportunity to apply their learning from the course in an international context.

Costa Rica is a Central American country with a population of about 5 million. Costa Rica is known for its long-standing democracy, strong public institutions, a highly educated workforce, and exemplary sustainable development initiatives. Its economy, once heavily dependent on agriculture, has diversified to include sectors such as finance, high-tech manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and ecotourism. The country has consistently performed favorably in the Human Development Index, placing 63rd in the world in 2017. Costa Rica is the only country to meet all five UNDP criteria established to measure environmental sustainability and was twice ranked the best performing country in the New Economics Foundation's Happy Planet Index. Costa Rica aims to become a carbon-neutral country by 2021. The country currently produces 99% of its electricity from renewable sources (hydro, geothermal, and solar).

Participants will develop a broad understanding of contemporary Costa Rica through interactions with leading practitioners from diverse sectors. Site visits in the greater metropolitan area of San José will focus more deeply on the topic of librarianship in Costa Rica. Site visits will include the University of Costa Rica, the National Judicial Library, the National Library, the National Archives, public school libraries, and the National Museum Library. In addition, co-curricular activities will expose students to Costa Rica's coffee industry and its vibrant biodiversity.

Participants will be lodged in a small, simple hotel located near the University of Costa Rica and UB´s partner for this experience--the Institute for Central American Development Studies. Breakfast and lunch will be enjoyed together as a group. Evening meals and activities will often be enjoyed together (with some opportunities for independent exploration).
