Program Description:

Rovira i Virgili University (URV)

Rovira i Virgili University (also known as Universitat Rovira i Virgili or URV) is located in the Catalan cities of Tarragona and Reus, Spain. Tarragona is a port city located in the north-east of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea. It is the capital of the Tarragona province, and part of the Catalonia region, about 60 miles southwest of Barcelona.

Visitors to the city flock to the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria, Archaeological Museum, Amphitheater of Tarragona, and the Roman ruins of Tarraco, which have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.  Another cultural attraction is the Santa Tecla festival. Held in late September, this full week of music, fireworks, and parades honors the patron saint of the city. The famous demonstration of “castellers” (human castles) draws tourists from all over the world.

The University is a teaching and research institution with centers in Tarragona, Reus, Vila-seca, Tortosa and El Vendrell. Although URV was created quite recently (1991) by the Parliament of Catalonia from the already existing university faculties and schools, its roots may be traced back to the 16th century Tarragona University.

More than 15,000 students currently attend URV, pursuing 40+ undergraduate degrees and 50+ graduate/doctoral degrees. URV welcomes more than 300 exchange students each year from partner universities worldwide.

Although URV's primary language of instruction is Spanish, URV offers a few programs at the Undergraduate level, where students may take coursework instructed in English. Students may not take courses in Business or Medicine. These majors include: Computer Engineering/Science, Economics, Electrical & Telecommunication Engineering, Geography, and some limited coursework in History, English, and Journalism. Please review the list of Undergraduate Level Courses offered in English for more information.

For Graduate level students, URV offers courses in: Anthropology, Archaeology, Nutrition, and Spanish Education. In addition, many Engineering Departments offer coursework in English including, Computer, Chemical, Electrical, Environmental, and Industrial Engineering. Please review the list of Graduate Level courses offered in English and discuss how these courses may fulfill requirements with your academic department.

Exchange students may take Catalan language courses at no additional cost or Spanish language courses for a discounted fee. For more information on course availability, please click here.

Rovira i Virgili University has a student residence in the center of Tarragona, next to the Plaça Imperial Tàrraco and just a few minutes from the university campus. There are single and double rooms. The Sant Jordi Residence was refurbished in 2010 and has total of 175 rooms, all designed to make students' stay as comfortable as possible. The residence is open throughout the year except for the university holiday periods (Christmas and Easter weeks).

Students may also choose to rent their own/shared apartment. URV has an accommodation office that connects those who are looking for accommodation with those who have rooms available.

Estimated costs for this program can be found at the top of this page next to Budget Sheets by clicking on the term.

UB students are encouraged to apply for study abroad scholarships. To learn more about the scholarships available to UB students, please visit our scholarships page.
