Program Description:

International Economic and Comparative Law in Context

Cable Car in Wellington     Beehive Wellington     Downtown Wellington
Wellington provides an excellent backdrop for legal exploration. The city is compact, very safe, and English-speaking, so students can easily acclimate to their surroundings.
The International Economic and Comparative Law in Context course will provide students with exposure to the legal system in New Zealand which is like that of the United States in that it originated in the United Kingdom, but also differs from the American system in important ways. The largest emphasis will be placed on international economic law issues including trade, business and investment, but will include sessions designed to highlight differences between the United States and New Zealand legal traditions. For some examples, New Zealand does not have a written Constitution; has a system of parlimentary sovereignty; has a very different tort law regime; and has a unique approach to intellectual property.

Students will meet with local academics, government officials,
and private legal practitioners to gain insights into various issues faced by New Zealand exporters and importers as well as into a variety of broader legal considerations.

Students will stay in university-facilitated housing at Victoria University of Wellington.

Estimated costs for this program can be found at the top of this page next to Budget Sheets by clicking on Winter.

UB students are encouraged to apply for study abroad scholarships. To learn more about the scholarships available to UB students, please visit our scholarships page.
