Program Description:

International Research Experience Program at TU Darmstadt

TU Darmstadt1     TU Darmstadt2     TU Darmstadt3
Known as the City of Science, Darmstadt is highly regarded for its academic and scientific communities. It is home to numerous high tech companies in sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology, and over 30 research institutions. Parts of Darmstadt date back to the 8th century and much of the city center was rebuilt after heavy bombing during the Second World War - this makes the city an interesting mix of old and new. It is a medium-sized city with a multicultural population and an attractive location in the Odenwald mountain region in southwestern Germany. Its location and excellent public transport systems make it very easy to explore the rest of Germany and continental Europe.

Technische Universität Darmstadt dates back to 1877. It is one of the leading universities in Germany and well known outside Germany for its contributions in engineering and computer science. It offers a wide variety of courses in the natural and engineering sciences. TU Darmstadt also has a strong focus on research with 200 research institutes, many of which are national or international institutes. In its teaching, TU Darmstadt places a strong emphasis on the connection between science and economy so students are encouraged to work on practical applications alongside their studies.

The Summer International Research Experience Program (IREP) at TU Darmstadt gives students the opportunity to undertake serious research for 10 to 12 weeks during the summer and earn 6 UB credits. Participants choose a research project and receive academic support and supervision from a TU Darmstadt faculty member. German language skills are not required as all oral and written communication for the research project will be in English.

Participants can choose from a list of available projects or develop a proposal for their own project in cooperation with their home department. Available departments at TU Darmstadt include:
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
  • German Language & Literature
  • Materials and Earth Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Physics
  • Psychology
  • Social Science
  • Sport Sciences
Orientation Program
To foster a better understanding of Germany and help students adjust to their new surroundings, the IREP Summer program offers a 3-day orientation program prior to the research project.

Guided Excursions
Guided excursions to Heidelberg and other culturally interesting destinations are offered throughout the program.

1. Admission Requirements
Students must prioritize their research topics by stating clearly their first, second and third preference. Students can either choose three research projects from           the IREP Database (will be updated soon) or choose their own research projects.
  • If students choose their own research topic they must:
    • State which subject they would like to research.
    • Find a professor here in TU Darmstadt who works in any related field to this topic.
    • Contact the professor directly through email or contact our offices to get in touch with that professor in order to get pre-approval for this topic.
2. Clarify availability of research projects
Students should send a short email to listing the following information:
  • the title of the research projects and their supervisors
  • the name of your home university
  • the time period you wish to apply for (e.g. IREP Summer 2018)
  • your GPA and years of university study up to this date
  • the degree level (e.g. undergraduate/graduate) of your current degree
TU Darmstadt will check the availability of the projects and get back to you as soon as possible.

         3. Online application and supporting documents
Once you have received project availability confirmation from TU Darmstadt please click on Apply Now found at the top right of this webpage to complete the                        online application for this program, this will be a combination of UB and TU Darmstadt's application materials.
  • For “Motivation letter and/or Learning Agreement” please upload the IREP application form signed by the student, the Head of the Department and the            International Exchange Office at your home university. (Please separate motivation letters for each of your chosen projects using the template provided).
  • For “Proof of german language proficiency” upload a Curriculum Vitae/resume
  • For “Academic transcript of records” upload copies of your university transcripts, including the most recent ones.
  • For “Proof of english language proficiency” upload a recommendation letter
        4. Acceptance to the project?
Once formal admission requirements are fulfilled, the International Office at TU Darmstadt will forward the documents to the IREP project supervisors for approval                and inform the student as soon as the project supervisors give us their choice (6 weeks for the placement period).

        5. Receive admission documents
If the application was successful, the student will receive an email confirming your acceptance for a research project from the International Office at TU Darmstadt.              You will receive the admission documents and further information within 4 weeks after being accepted into the program.

Please keep in mind: Nomination by the home university does not guarantee a research placement. The final acceptance into the IREP always depends on the decision of the respective IREP supervisor.
The IREP Summer program takes place during the German academic semester. On-campus housing is generally not available during the program. TU Darmstadt, therefore, places students participating in these programs in off-campus housing. Students in both on-campus and off-campus housing pay their rent directly to the housing office or the landlord upon their arrival in Darmstadt.

TU Darmstadt does not offer temporary housing for exchange students and program students. In case you arrive earlier and your room is not available, you are strongly recommended to make reservations at the local youth hostel (at least 6 weeks in advance) or at a hotel in Darmstadt. Please note that all housing costs will be at your own expense.

TU Darmstadt reserves housing in off-campus housing facilities for students applying for housing for less than 5 months.

Estimated costs for this program can be found at the top of this page next to Budget Sheets by clicking on Summer. Please note the budget sheet currently lists the summer 2015 program expenses. Summer 2018 program expenses will be posted as soon as updated information is available.

UB students are encouraged to apply for study abroad scholarships. To learn more about the scholarships available to UB students, please visit our scholarships page.
