Program Description:

University of Salamanca

Salamanca1     Salamanca3     Salamanca 2
Salamanca is a university city rich in history, culture, and architecture. One of Salamanca’s greatest attractions is the Plaza Mayor which was built in the 18th century and today is the focus of day and night life in Salamanca. The Old City has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In 2002, Salamanca was selected as a European Cultural Capital demonstrating that it is also a modern city. Salamanca is situated in western Spain in the southwest corner of Castile & Leon close to the border with Portugal. Castilian Spanish, considered to be the purest form of Spanish, is spoken in Salamanca, making the city a popular destination for students of Spanish language. With a population of approximately 158,000, Salamanca offers all the advantages of a small city and a true university town.

Founded in 1218, the University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. During the 15th and 16th centuries, it was an important center in the worldwide debate on humanism. Throughout its history, the university has had a strong tradition of academic excellence, particularly in the humanities and language studies. Today, USAL is a modern, medium-sized university with over 30,000 students, including over 9,000 international students.
